Phyllis DeAntonio

That personal connection spurred Phyllis to pursue a clinical specialty in oncology, and it continues to guide her work with Vidant Health today. As administrator for cancer services at Vidant Medical Center, she oversees all of Vidant Health’s cancer programs, including outreach, the cancer registry and the infusion center.

One of the programs she’s most proud of – the Cancer Care Navigator program – began in 2013. The navigator is a case manager and will oversee the patient’s care as long as he or she is a patient at Vidant Health. Trained nurses and social workers act as liaisons, helping patients talk to doctors, make appointments, access community services, or simply get transportation to and from treatments.

This level of support helps people, especially the most needy, get access to care they might not have received otherwise. Many live in isolated areas or struggle economically. Some do not have families nearby. “The Navigation Program helps our patients who are less fortunate to work through a lot of the barriers that they face on a daily basis,” Phyllis said. “They may not know where their next meal is coming from, let alone having a cancer diagnosis they have to deal with.”

Phyllis sees the Vidant Health Foundation as her partner in facing these challenges. Together, they create programs that will have the biggest impact on lives, then find donors to help fund them. Phyllis herself gives financially and urges others to do the same. “Invest in us. Come let us talk to you. Let us give you a tour of the current facilities. You will see for yourself the struggles that we face on a daily basis and how we want to make improvement to care so patients don’t have to leave eastern North Carolina to get the cancer care that they need.”
